How Linen is Made from Flax
Step 1: Cultivation
Flax plants are grown in cool, temperate climates. The plants mature in about 100 days, producing tall stalks with beautiful blue flowers. Unlike many crops, flax requires minimal water and no pesticides when grown organically.
Step 2: Retting
After harvest, flax stalks undergo retting—a natural decomposition process. The stalks are left in fields or water, allowing beneficial bacteria to break down the pectin holding fibers together. This ancient technique produces the strongest linen fibers.
Step 3: Processing & Spinning
The retted stalks are dried and broken to separate the long, silky fibers from the woody core. These fibers are then combed (hackled) and spun into yarn. Traditional methods ensure each thread maintains its natural strength and character.
Sustainable Hemp Processing
Eco-Friendly Fiber Extraction
Hemp processing begins with decortication, where the outer bark is mechanically separated from the inner woody core. Modern sustainable methods use water-based processing and mechanical breaking instead of harsh chemicals. The long bast fibers are then cleaned, combed, and prepared for spinning.
What makes hemp particularly sustainable is its rapid growth cycle—maturing in just 3-4 months—and its ability to improve soil health through phytoremediation. Every part of the hemp plant is utilized, creating a zero-waste production model.
Natural Fiber Strength & Durability
Linen and hemp fibers are among the strongest natural fibers, making them ideal for high-traffic areas and long-lasting home textiles.
With proper care, natural fiber textiles can last for generations, becoming softer and more beautiful with each use and wash.
Both linen and hemp excel at wicking moisture away, keeping you comfortable and maintaining a healthy indoor environment.
At the end of their life cycle, these fibers return to nature completely, leaving no harmful residues behind.
